At Ballet Kalamazoo®, our children's ballet program is where that journey starts. We welcome dancers as young as three years old into a studio built on three things: exceptional classical training, genuine kindness, and the deep belief that every child who walks through our door is extraordinary.
Our youngest dancers are not a stepping stone to something more important. They are the heart of this studio.

HOW WE TEACH:
Classical ballet is one of the most disciplined and beautiful art forms in the world. It also happens to be one of the best things you can give a young child.
Through structured, age-appropriate classes grounded in the American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum — the gold standard in youth ballet training- our students build far more than technique. They build focus, confidence, resilience, and the quiet joy of learning something truly difficult and doing it well.
We move at the pace of each child. We celebrate every milestone. We never rush. And we never forget that the most important thing happening in our studio is a child discovering what they love.
ONE ENROLLMENT. EVERY CLASS.
New for 2026–27: dancers enroll in a level, not a time slot. One flat monthly rate includes every class time your child's level offers each week; come to one, two, or all of them. Miss a Monday? Come on Wednesday or Saturday instead, no scheduling required. More class, more progress, one predictable price.
THE CLASSES:
Sunshine Ballet — Pre-Primary Ages 3–4 · 30 minutes
$68 monthly — one enrollment includes all three weekly class times.
Your dancer's very first class. Joyful, gentle, and full of imagination. We introduce the foundational movements of classical ballet through music, play, and the magic of movement. This is where the love begins.
Monday 4:45–5:15 pm · Wednesday 5:15–5:45 pm · Saturday 9:00–9:30 am

Sky Blue Ballet — Primary Ages 5–6 · 45 minutes
$74 monthly — one enrollment includes all three weekly class times.
Technique begins to take shape. Young dancers learn positions, coordination, and musicality and the friendships that form at this level last for years.
Monday 5:15–6:00 pm · Wednesday 5:45–6:30 pm · Saturday 9:30–10:15 am
Lilac Ballet — Level 1 Ages 7+ · 60 minutes
$88 monthly — one enrollment includes up to three classes every week.
Serious training starts with frequency: Lilac dancers are encouraged to attend at least twice weekly, and all three classes are included in tuition.
Monday 6:00–7:00pm · Wednesday 6:30–7:30pm · Saturday 10:15–11:15am

Boys Ballet Program · Ages 5–8
Saturday 11:15am–12:00pm
Male dancers are central to classical ballet, and they are central to this studio. Our boys' program introduces young men to dance with the same seriousness and the same quality of instruction as every other program we offer. Boys are also welcome to join any children's class for their age group.

PERFORMANCES:
Every dancer has a stage. Some dancers reach for two.
At Ballet Kalamazoo, performance isn't a year-end afterthought; it's part of the training. And because dancers and families come to us with different goals, we've built two ways to take the stage.
At the Year-End School Showcase, every dancer performs.
Each June, every enrolled Ballet Kalamazoo dancer takes a professional stage at the Cori Terry Theatre. No audition. No extra rehearsal schedule. Preparation happens right in class, all year long.
The Showcase is a class demonstration, not a production or a recital. That's by design. Our younger levels present the real work of the classroom: barre, center, and the skills built across the year, followed by a short dance created in class. There are no elaborate sets and no months spent drilling a single routine, because every class hour spent polishing a recital number is an hour not spent training.
The stage shows the training itself.
Dancers wear their level's leotard color, simply and beautifully costumed. The audience watches the ladder of the school cross the stage, from Sunshine yellow to Noire black. Our Ruby and Noire dancers present their own classwork and repertoire, and our company dancers join in as well, demonstrating alongside the younger levels and leading them on stage, the way senior dancers at the great schools have always passed the art down.
For a five-year-old, it's lights, costume, music, and an audience. For her parents, it's seeing exactly how far a year of real training goes.
Kalamazo Youth Ballet Productions are for dancers who want more.
Our full-length story ballets, The Nutcracker Kalamazoo each December and our spring fairytale ballet, Beauty and the Beast in 2027, are performed by Kalamazoo Youth Ballet at Comstock Community Auditorium, with professional lighting, sound, and technical crew.
These productions are cast by audition. They carry a professional-level commitment: weekly Saturday rehearsals, a casting commitment families honor for the full production, and the expectations of a real company. That's exactly what shapes dancers and exactly why these roles are earned, not given.
Every dancer has a stage. Dancers who are ready for more have a path to it. That's how a pre-professional school works.

Many of our Conservatory Ballet dancers started right here in Sunshine Ballet, at age three. The pathway from first class to pre-professional training is one we have walked with our students for ten years.
